You’re invited to celebrate curiosity and creativity with me this month.
I’ve been wanting to lean in to more abstract art for a while. The past few weeks something finally seemed to shift as I approached the canvas with no expectations or plan other than to explore color and flow. I also happened to be having a little movie marathon by myself (something I hadn’t done in years). I put a drop cloth on the floor and sat in front of the TV, which I rarely do. I think it might have helped me get out of my head while painting. Some of the results were blah, yet a few new favorites also emerged out of the explorations. I didn’t have any prompts in mind when I painted these. The titles came after they were finished. I took time to look and listen. I often wonder what stories someone else would see and hear. Before I share the titles, I invite you to let them sing to you… kind of like playing name that tune. What would you name the painting?
I’d love to hear what you’d call it in the comments. I was working on it late one night so it stayed with me as I was falling asleep thinking about it and whether it was finished or wanted something more. I thought about adding glitter in one area with the feeling of a dream catcher. When I looked at it with fresh eyes the next day (and several days in a row), it felt finished and fun and uplifting as it is. I had lyrics from a song come to mind so it’s called “Over the Rainbow” about a place where dreams come true.
What about the next one? What would you call it?
I haven’t even committed to a title for it yet so I’d love to hear yours. There have been several swimming through my head along with another song about sitting on the dock of the bay… wasting time. I like that idea and feeling about having time to spare, slowing down, relaxing.
I’ll be exploring abstract ideas and approaches in more ways this month. While this kind of thing is often called an instagram challenge, I prefer to think of it as an invitation. I’d love to have you join me if it sounds interesting and inspiring to you as well.
This can be done through painting, photographs, collage, writing for a few minutes about the prompt in a journal, music, or whatever wonderful way you want. The imagery can be abstract or symbolic or more obvious and literal since many of the prompts are a bit abstract to begin with. You can use the prompts or ignore them to share any abstract post you feel like on a given day. It could be something created in the past that fits the prompt or something new. Join in anytime and skip any days if needed. It’s a way to play, wonder, and express ourselves without any pressure or rules. We can share the journey together using the tag #AbstractAugust2019 on social media or it can be a more personal exploration without the need to share. Anything Goes!
Let Your True Colors Shine!
