Ahhh…. I love this time of year as the seasons start to change here in the southern Blue Ridge mountains (kind of on the edge of the Smoky Mountains) with misty mornings and even a visit from a black bear in the back yard recently!

May joy grow like weeds wild & free! The botanicals in the art above were all inspired by wild plants that grow around our home. What does this time of year look like for you?
It is “Back to School” time for us, homeschool that is, which means a little less time in the studio for me. One of the ways I keep growing my art, while still giving my 8th grade twin boys enough attention and assistance (hello algebra!), is to make many colorful painted backgrounds when I can. Then, all I need is a paint pen, usually white, to add layers while making observations with my boys. Observing (and appreciating) the world around us is part of our homeschool work/time, especially the natural world since we live way out in the sticks. We often have ‘school’ outside on the porch, a picnic blanket, or in the woods. So, I tend to make lots of this style of art this time of year. Thankfully, these creations, with direct inspiration from the land where we live, often turn into some of my favorite pieces and have also been some of the best selling prints. Win, win, win! 😉

I love the ‘imperfections’ of the botanical bits I find for inspiration. It encourages me to accept and appreciate my own imperfections and unsteady hand, whether from old injuries in my hand and wrist or just nerves! I think all of it adds vitality in a world that can seem so mechanical these days. I utilize my camera & computer, but I also feel a deep need to stay connected to the energy of the Earth.
“Woven with Wonder” Original and Art Prints available
I love witnessing the wonder and beauty around me. I hope that viewers of my art feel the invitation to lean in to the presents and presence and to take a deep breath of life with me. The painting above was inspired by a poem I recently wrote and the many weavers around our home who do the Halloween decorating for me! 😉
I’ll be sharing the poem about Witnessing the Wonder in the October newsletter along with another sweet surprise. You can sign up for the free newsletters at ThriveTrue.com/MagicMail to get October’s letter before the end of the month. I welcome replies and love getting to know kindred spirits that way.
The paintings above are all part of my new “Growing Season” collection inspired by nature and also watching my kids grow so much and realizing how much I am growing in other ways as well. There are more paintings in progress for the series. Many of them will be featured in my 2019 Art Calendar, which is available for a limited time. They were all inspired by two of my favorite paintings from last year shown below.
